The solvent power of a supercritical fluid is adjustable by temperature or pressure. This allows selective extraction, i.e extract certain compounds and not others. Supercritical fluids are suitable as solvents as they display high diffusion coefficients, low viscosities and low surface tensions. Solvent recovery is usually easier to perform and post-purification requirements are less than other techniques. However, the technology involves using equipment rated for high pressures, thus the capital investment is usually higher.
This technique is used to activate the phenomenon known as cavitation. Cavitation is the production, growth and collapse of bubbles within a solvent, which greatly enhances conventional solvent extraction. The bubbles produced have temperatures of 5000 K and pressures of up to a 1000 atm. The compression and expansion within the plant matrix disintegrates cells and releases the cell contents. This method extracts all the compounds that are present, but the capital investment is usually less.

Open-blasting (releasing the solvent into the atmosphere when extracting), especially when using hydrocarbons as solvent (e.g. butane), poses an immense safety risk and should be avoided. Our closed-loop systems are simple solutions to provide efficient conventional solvent extraction. These closed-loop systems can be enhanced using ultrasound or microwaves.
Microwaves enhance conventional solvent extraction, especially with regard to shortened extraction times. The microwaves cause rapid heating of the moisture found within the plant cells. This causes immense pressure on the cell walls and results in cell rupture, which releases the cell contents.
